The Gardner Family

2000 was the sixth year of performing Caroline Wardle's edition of the York Cycle of Mystery Plays. Most years, when we perform the plays on the late May Bank Holiday weekend, we perform between four and six of the 47 plays in the cycle, and are slowly working chronologically through them.

Jesus heals the Lame Man 1997

Mary and Joseph Flee 1997
The Shepherds Singing? 1997

The Angels 1997

As well as being researched and written by Caroline Wardle, the mystery plays bring out all that is great in an English village, by including many many enthusiastic helpers on costume, cart-making, street musicians and wonderful support from local businesses who sponsor the event, and some of the pubs welcome visitors with special mediaeval menus.

In 1997 we were especially privileged to have a group of Ugandan Organic Farmers come and join us as the Angels in the pictures above. They were being trained at Warren Farm in Streatley by the Kulika Trust, and are tremendous ambassadors for their country.  They keep many friends in Goring and Streatley.
